K FFL & K DLP : Bonjour Arthur ! Hello Emma!

I’m excited to be working with the Kindergarten students in both FFL and DLP classes!  We’ve begun exploring the French language together with some special friends …

First, students got to know Arthur le hérisson, or Arthur the hedgehog, and Emma the bird.

Arthur le hérisson

Arthur only speaks French, so students practice using French words with him, such as “bonjour,” “merci,” and “au revoir.”

Emma the bird

Emma only speaks English, so students taught her some French words to use before she made her journey to Paris, such as “je m’appelle.”

Students who are hearing French for the first time enjoy speaking to Arthur using the new words we’re learning; they also feel proud to be able to teach some French words to Emma.

Students who already speak French might identify with Arthur’s language background, and they build empathy for other friends who are not yet speaking French.

Where in the world are we from?

You might have noticed this bulletin board outside the main office that our ENL teacher Katie Lapham created to show where some of our PS 58 students and families are from.  Can you find the country where your family comes from?  What languages are spoken there?  What other countries would you like to visit?

¡Gracias Señora Lapham!

Welcome back to LW, 2017-2018!

I’m so glad to see students in grades 1 and 2 for Language Workshop again this year, and to get to meet the new Kindergarten students!  For a full update on what’s happening in LW at PS 58 this year, see this page.

To kick off the year, all classes engaged in activities to raise language awareness.  We heard words in new languages, and we identified what languages are spoken in different places around the world.  What languages do you speak at home?  What languages do you see and hear in your community?

For more resources on how to explore languages, check out this page.

For students who were in LW last year, don’t forget the Quizlet review activities that are available to you here.

More Quizlet sets will be coming soon!
